Skip the Sakura: Why Plum Blossoms (Ume) Are Tokyo’s Best-Kept February Secret

Everyone knows about the Cherry Blossoms. By late March, Tokyo’s parks will be a sea of blue tarps, selfie sticks, and "Sakura fatigue." But if you are in Tokyo right now—in February 2026—you have access to something far more exclusive, more fragrant, and significantly more peaceful.

Welcome to the season of the Plum Blossom (Ume).

At Get Around Japan, we often tell our guests that if the Cherry Blossom is the "pop star" of Japan, the Plum Blossom is the "poet." It represents resilience, elegance, and the first whisper of spring.

Why Plum Blossoms are the "Insider’s Choice" in 2026

  1. The Scent: Unlike Cherry Blossoms, which have a very faint aroma, Plum Blossoms carry a rich, sweet, and spicy fragrance. It’s a natural aromatherapy session just walking through the trees.

  2. Zero Crowds: You can actually hear the birds chirping. While 2026 overtourism is making Sakura season a challenge, the Ume festivals remain local, quiet, and authentic.

  3. The Colors: Ume ranges from stark, snowy white to a deep, "Barbie" pink and vivid crimson. The contrast against the crisp February blue sky is a photographer's dream.

Where to Find the Best Blooms (February 2026)

  • Hanegi Park (Setagaya): Home to over 650 plum trees. The Setagaya Ume Matsuri is running now through March 1st, 2026. Don’t miss the plum-themed madeleines sold by local vendors!

  • Yushima Tenjin (Ueno Area): This stunning shrine is a 2-minute walk from Yushima Station. The Bunkyo Ume Matsuri runs until March 8th, 2026, featuring traditional performances on weekends.

  • Kameido Tenjin Shrine: Known for its beautiful red bridge, this spot offers a more traditional, "Edo-style" flower viewing experience.

📍 Looking Ahead: The 2026 Sakura Escape

While the Plum Blossoms offer a quiet, fragrant retreat in February, we know many of you are counting down the days until the Cherry Blossoms arrive.

In 2026, crowds at famous spots like Nakameguro are expected to be at an all-time high. To help our guests escape the "human wave," Get Around Japan is launching our exclusive Cherry Blossom River Cruise starting March 23rd, 2026.

Instead of fighting for a spot on the sidewalk, you’ll glide under the pink canopy from the water. It is, quite simply, the most peaceful way to see the Sakura in Tokyo.

Spaces are extremely limited for the 2026 season. If you are visiting Tokyo between late March and early April, we recommend booking your cruise and other tours early, so you not left out in this special, but busy season!
